Green Wall I: Literature.

DIY hydroponic living green wall.

Summer Rayne Oakes in Ep 028: DIY Sub-irrigated Green Wall – Plant One On Me shows great ideas though not hydroponic. This would be easy to implement using plastic gardening boxes.

Opaque containers for plants (needs to be dark inside to prevent algae growth)! Black absords sunlight and heat up the reservoir. White spray might be the best.

No soil but small stones (gravel stones, clay pellets, leca balls or lava rock might be an option, too), only, is used in How to Make Indoor Water Garden From Recycled Materials | indoor hydroponic gardening//GREEN PLANTS. This is nice. The plants are Money plant/Pothos, Spider plant, Arrowhead plant, Lucky bamboo, Marsh pennywort plant. The water should be replaced once a week.

Mini Tomatoes

Each tomato plant requires about 12 litres of nutrient solution. Many factors can cause the tomato plants to use water faster, so it is recommended that you use a container that can hold double the minimum amount of water. The Ebb and flow method is used in the Wikihow.

Plant seeds in a nursery tray with a special growing material for hydroponics, instead of ordinary soil. Before using, soak the material with pH 4.5 water, aided by a pH test kit from a garden store. Plant the seed under the surface, and keep under plastic domes or other transparent material to trap moisture and encourage the seeds to sprout. Coconut coir or perlite.

The pump: 30 mins every 2,5 hrs. You’ll need to increase the watering frequency if they begin to wilt, and decrease it if the roots become slimy or soaked. Ideally, the material the plants are in should just barely dry out when the next watering cycle comes along.

the pH is within the range of 5.8–6.3.

Every two weeks, or once a week if your plants do not look healthy, empty the reservoir completely and rinse the support material and roots of the tomato plants with pure, pH 6.0 water to leach away mineral buildup that could cause harm.

Herbs

The hydroponic herbs include, according to herbgardening.com are

  • basil (sweet basil, lettuce leaf basil, globe basil, Thai lemon basil, cinnamon basil, Siam Queen Basil, and purple/opal basils). 5—10 days
  • Rosemary
  • Mint 12—16 days
  • Lemon verbena
  • French tarragon
  • Italian flat-leafed parsley
  • baby dill, sage
  • oregano 8—14 days
  • thyme 8—20 days
  • cilantro.
  • Chives 15—21 days
  • Sage 10—21 days
  • Tarragon 10—14 days
  • Marjoram 8—15 days
  • Echinacea,
  • stevia rebaudiana

The air stone is used to distribute the airflow more evenly in the water container.

If the herbs are not started from a seed but bought some living herbs, wash away all the dirt from the root system to avoid the contamination.

Ebb and Flow

The easy method to grow hydroponic is ebb and flow and also called flood and drain. There is flood-and-drain cycle which is repeated 2-4 times a day a few minutes of soaking OR 3-4 times a day times 15 minutes. An aquarium pump is used to pump the water.

Nutritients

The nutritient should have relitively high nitrogen (N) to phosporus (P) ratio.

pH: Collected rainwater may be better suited for hydroponics than tap water, especially if your tap water is especially “hard” with high mineral content as we have in Tallinn.

Light

Herbs need full spectrum light with a plenty at the blue end; 6500 K tubes. The pH for the herbs is 6.0 – 6.5.

A compact fluorescent bulb (CFL).

At least 6 hrs a day.
